((I'm back! I was out of town for a week, and I'm leaving again on Monday, but here we go for the moment....)

Both Rachel and Alexander were untrained Light witches--their mother was Lila Light, the last official member of the Light line of witches. Light has an affinity with fire, this is what made the flames go slightly crazy at times (in the Black Flame excerpt, Aubrey thinks something along the lines of Ather being about to find out what an untrained fire witch [Rachel] could do if she carried on much more), this is also what freaked Alexander out and promped him to seek out someone who could teach him to control and use his power. (Actually, as he was trained as a triste and by a triste, the power that he uses isn't really that much like his Light power, but whatever. His Light power no longer breaks out, so--as far as he knows--Pandora [the triste who trained him] taught him how to use the power he already had.)

So, the reason that Risika has a hawk form (and a tiger form, for that matter) is not because she is Mistari or Avian or anything like that. Stronger vampires have a very fine control over their form, she is simply strong enough now that she can shapeshift.

Aubrey, will will notice, does the same in DimV (when fighting with Dominique, he teleports and then goes wolf to get out of range of her power before teleporting back), this does not mean that origionally he was a wolf shapeshifter. He was actually a normal human... well, normal for that day and age and where he lived.

It is also hinted that Aubrey also has more then one form--it said that the wolf was one of his favorite forms, leading to the conclusion that he had at least one other form. What we don't know is what those forms are.

[cough]ehem[/cough] *sidelong glance*

Only very, very strong vampires (such as Aubrey and Risika) can change their forms. Some vampires (like Ather or Jaguar) were born as shapeshifters and retain that ability; I don't believe it's an expression of their relative power. Vampires who were born as humans or witches, however, must be very strong before they can change shape (not including the members of Akka's line).

It's possible that once they learn how to change, they can take any form; maybe they have to learn two or three forms and get good at them. But no, not every vampire can shapeshift.

Very few vampires are powerful enough to shapeshift. Most vampires in Silver's line can, though I'm not sure about Kala and Aiden. So far as I'm aware, Siete's direct fledglings can all shapeshift, though aside from Silver, Renaei and Kalika, I think they're each limited to one form.

All of Akka's line can shapeshift, but that's a line-specific trait. Otherwise, it's mostly just those who were elavie before they were changed (Jaguar, for instance) who have second forms.

yours,
ahar
